EDITORIAL: Yes on DD: Upgrade county roads and transit systems, The Press Democrat, September 20, 2020

Measure DD emphasizes local road repairs and climate-friendly alternatives to automobiles, including bus service and bike and pedestrian paths. Revenue would be divided between the two categories, with 65% for roads and 35% for everything else…Sonoma County desperately needs to improve its roads and transit, just as it improved Highway 101. Measure DD would help achieve those goals. The Press Democrat recommends a yes vote.

Measure DD will maintain Sonoma County’s ability to compete for State funding of transportation projects that are now in the planning stages...Without a local funding source such as the Transportation Sales Tax, many of them could never be planned or constructed...The time between November and 2025 (is) a crucial time to make projects shovel-ready so we can be competitive when infrastructure grants are awarded.

The measure also has provisions that should put taxpayers, who are facing tough financial times, at ease...the main safeguard in this tax is the agency that administers the funds. The SCTA, under the leadership of Executive Director Suzanne Smith, has been an excellent steward of taxpayer money for almost 20 years. Its officials have kept all of their promises, which is rare for a governmental agency. Indeed, the Sonoma County Taxpayer’s Association (the other SCTA) has remained neutral on the measure, mainly because of the fiscal responsibility the transportation authority has shown...The Argus-Courier recommends a yes vote on Measure DD for a modern transportation network.
